Docsminder can connect to a Docsminder database in one of two ways Local - this is a direct pointer to a directory accessible to Docsminder - ie on the local hard disk or LAN. Remote - this is a TCP/IP connection to a Docsminder server anywhere in the World. The Default DatabasesWhen Docsminder is installed, we provide two databases for you to use. You can then create as as many other databases as you require. These two databases are...1. The Sample Database This database is created when you install Docsminder. This database has a number of records that we have created for you at SecureDoc that you can use to see how Docsminder works. 2. A blank database This database is created when you install Docsminder. You are asked during the install process where you want to install your data. This database is totally empty - except for a few core system tables. The are no offices, users, boxes, files, etc. You would generally use this database as a template to generate new database - which is exactly why it is provided. Local modeLocal connection mode will let you point to a directory on your system that contains a Docsminder database. If you have a Docsminder Lite version, then this directory has to be on your local hard disk. If you have a Docsminder Professional or Corporate version, then this directory can be either local or on a network drive.Network drivesYou can specify a network drive either as a mapped drive - or using a full UNC path. For example, these two paths might point to the same directoryz:\docsminder\shared data (mapped drive) \\Comms\DocsMinder_Server\Shared data (UNC path) It is generally better to use a UNC path as you do not have to wait for Windows to map this path to a local drive letter. Windows may also have troubles with the mapping, or may even drop it out sometimes. Remote modeYou can connect to a Docsminder Server anywhere on the Internet. The Docsminder Server needs to be up and running before you try to connect.Docsminder Server is a separate program, and needs to be installed separately. This program is included on your Docsminder CDROM, and there is a separate installation process for the Server. You would normally install the Docsminder Server on a central computer on your office LAN. But you can install it anywhere you like - in a different building, state or country. All you need is a working Internet connection to the IP address of the computer that Docsminder Server is installed on. What this generally means is that you need an opening in your firewall to connect to Port 9090. Server AddressThis is the IP address of the computer that Docsminder Server is installed on. Do not enter the domain name here - just the numerical IP address.Server HostThis is the domain name of the computer that Docsminder Server is installed on. You can specify either the IP address or a domain name. You should not enter both.It is generally a good idea to use a domain name as the IP address can change whereas a domain name is fixed. Local machineIf you have installed the Server to your local machine, you can simply press the Local Machine button to make the computer work out your local IP address. This is generally 127.0.0.1, but if you have more than one network card, or you have bound an IP address to your network card, this might not be the case.Server PortThis needs to match the Port you have setup on the Docsminder Server. By default this is 9090. If you have a firewall, you may need to setup Outgoing access for TCP/IP for this port. |
