Installing Docsminder Server

We provide an installation program to make sure that the Docsminder Server is installed correctly. For most users, just running the install program with the default settings is enough.

The install process is as follows.

Install the Server

All of the operational files are copied to the folder you specify. This is usually something like 'c:\program files\Docsminder Server'
The Sample Database is installed. This will always be overwritten.
An empty (blank) database is installed. If you already have a database installed, it is left alone
Any required shortcuts are created (on Desktop or Startup folders)
A log file is created so that the Docsminder Server might be fully un-installed
A small console mode program is run (DBSetup.exe) to configure the Server databases, users and procedures.
If you have decided to install as a Service, the service is installed.

Install the Server Administration program

All of the operational files are copied to the folder you specify. This is usually something like 'c:\program files\Docsminder Admin'
Any required shortcuts are created
A log file is created so that the Docsminder Administration program might be fully un-installed

Please note - you can run the setup program as many times as you like over an existing installation. You will not lose any of your existing data. However, you will reset the server databases, users, events and procedures. These are set back to their default values.

Everything is placed in (or under) the install directory. Docsminder is a "green" install in that it places nothing in the Windows system and Docsminder does not use the registry at all. We do save the install folder to the registry on installation so that you might install to that same directory later, but that is all.

We also take GREAT pains to uninstall everything related to Docsminder if you do decide to do so. We are one of the few programs around that actually does this, believe it or not.

Once you have installed the programs, you will will generally see that the Docsminder Server is running.

If you want to register the Server, then you will need to open the Docsminder Server and use the Licence screen. Otherwise there is nothing much else you can do on the server. For everything else, you need to run the Server Administration program.
