Docsminder Server

Docsminder can be configured as a Client/Server application. In this setup, Docsminder is in two sections - the same "client" software as normal - and the client/server application. This client/server application is centrally located on your office network (LAN or WAN), and is called the Docsminder Server.

There are many benefits to using a central Docsminder Server. These include

1. You only need to licence one central copy of Docsminder. If you have a lot of workstations (that would normally have to be individually licenced), this can be a huge time saver.
2. All database control is located centrally. If you want to switch all users to another database - it can be done at the server.
3. Database backups can be run automatically via a timed event in the server.
4. The Docsminder Server simply "points" to an existing Docsminder data folder - so standalone and client/server users can use exactly the same data. It also means that there is absolutely no conversion process going from standalone to client/server.
5. There are some advantages to using a client/server database system if you have a very large database or a large number of daily transactions
6. The Docsminder Server is TCP/IP driven - you can locate your server anywhere that your network can connect to. You could have your server at one physical location, and your clients at another.
7. Administration of the Docsminder Server is via a separate Admin program that also communicates over TCP/IP. This means that you can control the server from any location on your network. You do not have to be at the computer that is actually running the Docsminder Server.
8. The Docsminder Server can run as service.

It should be noted that the Docsminder Client software is the same whether you want to use a Docsminder Server or not. In fact, you can have some Docsminder Clients setup to use the server and some not.

The Docsminder software (both client and server) will only run on a Windows system. This can be Windows 98, NT4, 2000, XP or any Windows Server.

Because the Docsminder Client can easily switch between "local" and "server" modes, you can start using Docsminder as a simple client, then upgrade down the track to the centrally based Docsminder Server at any time.
